Building Your Staff Wellbeing Foundations

The video above which talks about building the right foundations is taken from a 15 minute video called Culture, Cake and Yogo. You can watch the full video here.

Building the right foundations is the only way to make sure that staff wellbeing is part of your culture and something that simply happens every day.

This means having a focus on leadership behaviours and making sure these align with your values and underpin your vision. These should ideally be created with staff and be well articulated. Can all staff explain them and describe the everyday behaviours they would see if the values were being lived across the Trust  and in there school, or team?

Making sure there are effective systems of support in place to deliver these is also key, including effective praise, performance management, appraisals and one to ones.

Many schools start with a focus on wellbeing days, activities like yoga, cakes at meetings and training. This is understandable as they are easier to do, though once completed, nothing is likely to have changed.

Welbee was created with a group of schools around Belfast and has developed working with a guidance panel of schools and Trusts. Our process starts with measurement, recognised by the DFE's Staff Wellbeing Charter, which is needed if you are going to decide on the right actions and track progress. Yet our focus is on what happens next and the suggested actions you will receive in your report, alongside filtered scores, make it easier to build wellbeing into your culture - starting with those strong foundations.
